1. What is Powder Coating?

  • Powder Coating is a process in which a metal or wood substrate is finished with a dry polymer resin. This is a growing finishing process and is used on a wide array of products that you see in your day to day life. Companies are specifying this finish more often because it is durable, efficient, environmentally compliant, and looks great. You are limitless in what you can do with powder coating as it can be used as a decorative and/or a protective long lasting finish. As we continue to advance in technology the finish continues to become more durable over the years. The polymer resins used can be fortified with curatives, pigments and other agents to better adhere to the part, however the pretreatment method is of the utmost importance. Pretreatment can involve a hand spray wand, hand wiping, blasting, and for production lines most customers use a pass through overhead conveyor pretreatment washer. We typically manufacture these out of stainless steel and they can include a number of pretreatment stages such as 3, 5 or more. After the part is washed and dried properly then you can begin applying powder via an electrostatic powder gun. These can be automatic or manually applied. The most common application equipment manufacturers are Wagner, Nordson and Gema. After the powder has been applied to a grounded part it is ready to cure for roughly 20 minutes at 400 degrees. The curing process can vary depending on your oven and part. If you need any servicing or have any questions on what to purchase to get started contact us anytime.
